An initial consultation in the presence of your paper artifact will help the conservator determine the subsequent course of action for your individual object.

Whenever possible, the object should be brought to the studio for examination. On-site examinations may also be arranged if the object is difficult to move or installed in situ.

Depending on the object, its condition, and the expectations of the client, a consultation may result in a proposal for conservation treatment, recommendations on preventive care for the object, or a referral to other professional services or resources.

Before any conservation work is begun, a contract outlining the scope and cost of the proposed work must be agreed upon and signed by both the conservator and the client.
