Careful investigation of the structure, materials, and condition of the object enable the conservator to identify the extent and causes of any alteration and/or deterioration, and to propose an appropriate treatment plan for the object.
Only after thorough examination of the artifact will a conservator be able to give cost or time estimates for any proposed work.
